How Google Tests Software

This session was presented at EuroSTAR Conference 2011 – use the left hand menu to view this year’s Programme.
Google is one of a number of early Web innovators who helped push ship cycles from years down to weeks and accelerated the rapid rise of cloud computing. Thanks to these pioneering Web companies ideas have little time to get stale before they are productized and in the hands of consumers and enterprise customers.

This development model has created huge challenges for traditional testing organizations and this tutorial is about how Google responded to these challenges. Google is now a big company and has to deal with legacy code, a massive installed base and a broad product line that crosses any number of platforms, locales and languages. The manner in which Google executes testing is one of the keys in keeping our releases flowing despite these complexities.

James Whittaker presents Google’s approach to testing from its unique organizational structure to exactly how testing is performed at the unit, integration and system level. He explains the role of the developer and the user in testing at Google and demonstrates tools designed to make testers hyper-productive enablers of quality software.
