Transforming Trainees Into Testers

T2     Start Time : 15:45     End Time : 16:30

There’s a new tester in the group. The novice needs to develop knowledge and skill quickly, learning about the product and the project. That’s hard enough for anyone in any situation—but what do you do when the new tester is new to testing itself? Wouldn’t it be great if we could just wave a magic wand and produce a capable tester instantly?

Things aren’t quite that simple, but the process can be quicker and easier than you might imagine. In this presentation, Michael Bolton provides a report on approaches to rapid teaching and learning. He’ll highlight his experience teaching a group of people who had never been employed as professional testers, some of whom had never tested at all. He’ll describe the building blocks., the program of instruction, the goals and teaching methods, and some of the ways in which the testers applied what they learned in real-world work. The presentation will be supplemented by interviews and comments from testers who went through that program, and from people who worked with them and hired them. You’ll hear stories of the obstacles that testers faced as they moved from training into the job market and the workplace, and what the trainers learned as the program evolved. You’ll also hear a report on parallel programs around the world.

The object of the presentation is to provide you with lessons on what worked and what didn’t work so well; tips you can use and pitfalls you can avoid; and how you can apply some of those ideas to developing skill in your own testers—or in yourself. The process isn’t magic… but it can feel magical.
