Python for Testers: Testing RESTful APIs

Tutorial A     Start Time : 09:00     End Time : 17:30

Talk Abstract:

In this workshop we will use Python 3 to test a RESTful API, and we will see how fun, easy, and powerful it is.

Odds are that you as a tester have REST API:s in your organization, connecting different services, front-ends and back-ends, and it’s a fair chance you have to test them as well, in an automated or manual fashion.

REST API:s are very easy to work with and combined with the simplicity and strength of Python you can very quickly get started writing your own automated checks.

There are commercial and free tools out there that allow you to construct your own REST API calls, but the drawback of using any such tool is that inherently it will limit you in its application, and some of them with the added licence cost to boot.

In this case its easy to write your own test cases using Python and you will gain a lot of flexibility and power via the standard library and the Python ecosystem in doing so.

We will be using Python 3, PyTest, and Requests in this workshop for building automated test cases, generating test data, and also to achieve a clean and predictable “System Under Test”, cleaning up and resetting databases and other resources. All very useful skills for any tester in their work.
You will also learn how to consume external REST API:s to generate your own test data.

All of this, and you will also walk out with a much better understanding and knowledge of the Python programming language.

Participants are expected to bring their own laptops pre-installed with Virtualbox (this is important in order to achieve an efficient workshop) and the workshop virtual machine will be available ahead of time for download and as a USB stick during the class.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Python as a programming language is fun to work with
  2. Automation does not have to be restricted to commercial tools
  3. Programming is not limited to automation, but can equally well be incorporated into your exploratory testing
