“In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.” ~Mary Poppins.

Games have been an integral part of human civilization for many years now. As the saying goes, “Quality is everyone’s responsibility”; we want the entire team to actively foster and contribute to project quality. Ensuring effective engagement, collaboration, and innovation has always been challenging within testing teams. Is gamification the answer? Yes, probably.

Gamification is founded in human psychology and behavioral science fundamentals, and rests on three primary factors: motivation, ability level, and triggers. By applying gamification concepts, there is a potential to change how we can do testing in the following ways:

1. Gamification can help foster interest in learning, and help drive interest towards niche testing topics.

2. It would engage testing practitioners to explore advanced testing techniques and tools for their advantage, which they usually wouldn’t consider.

3. It would also help with crowdsourcing complex testing tasks with a purpose.

In this talk, I will walk through some gamification strategies and techniques that you can use to influence behavior change, and how these techniques can facilitate more effective collaboration and employee engagement. I will also discuss how gamification in software testing can lead to positive outcomes.

Let’s change how testing is taught, and practice influencing and inspiring future software engineers to take testing as a profession.
