Dead Internet Theory: Fiction, or Future?

Darren Richardson

10:30 - 11:15 CEST Wednesday 4th June

The dead internet is a bleak idea; in 2014 floated as a joke, the concept that content was made by bots, consumed by bots, and cut the human element out of the equation altogether. 10 years ago we laughed, and now that day is potentially upon us. This talk from a cybersecurity specialist will dive into the ethical ramifications of AI, show applications of hostile models to generate both legitimate and attack-based content.

We’ll explore the sociology of the internet, exploring how social media farms acted as a precursor to this potential outcome of AI. We’ll discuss proofs of concept for auto-content generation models, all leading to the bleak outcome: An internet that is so hostile to humans that they opt out altogether, leaving the internet a hollow shell of bots and automated business processes. And then, because the speaker doesn’t want to depress everyone, we’ll talk about ways to avoid this.

How to apply ethics to AI, how to use DevOps tooling as guardrails accountability in AI. And how we can build a future of software development where AI is a useful tool alongside humans instead of driving them out.
