Leading and motivating highly technical QA Teams

Madhulika Mitra

11:00 - 12:45 CEST Thursday 5th June

Leading a group of highly technical SDETs, QA engineers from the last decade has taught me a thing or two on how to keep them motivated, aligned to the QA strategy, believe in your vision as a manager and also shine with humility. Quality engineering has moved past the traditional execution of test cases, or building automated test suites but rather stepped into an enablement practise where QA engineers need to identify gaps in test levelling and coach teams on best QA practises. My talk focusses on how as leadership one can hire the best QA engineers, who work on par with devs showcasing technology with business acumen. It also tries to challenge the imposter syndrome and deepest insecurities people managers might face in highly technical environments where you do not just lead teams but also understand every aspect of their work and they look up to you for suggestions. Being a woman manager, added more flavours of challenges and i want to share how a supportive leadership can really turn things around for you but even if you do not have a nurturing boss, you can still can make the most with communication strategies.

As a “head of QA”, “Test lead”, “Chapter Lead”, “QA manager” after my session, they should be able to grow technically in their roles and also create areas for their team members to grow. They would be able to mentor their SDETs to grow as enablers and unlearn the traditional QA practises. If they want to build high performing QA team in a big or small company keeping QA practise relevant in the AI age this session is tailored for them.
