Our projects are hard. We wrestle with difficult, intractable problems. Would we make more progress if we had some more geniuses? Or even one genius…? Surely, it would only take one genius…One genius to deliver? Or one genius to totally mess it up? Designing and building software is not a solitary occupation. We work in groups, not because that is more fun, but because the problems and challenges we face are too complex for one person, however clever, to resolve. A single genius, or even a team of geniuses, might fail badly. A well-balanced, egoless team, where everyone contributes and is respected for their skills and viewpoints, is perhaps a surer route to success.

Isabel Evans

After nearly 40 years in the industry, software quality and testing practitioner Isabel Evans is now a post-graduate student at the University of Malta. Her research takes a people-focused approach to the design of tool support for testing. This arose from real-life experiences in the industry and led to the academic papers: “Stuck in Limbo with Magical Solutions”, “Scared, Frustrated and Quietly Proud”, and “Test tools: An illusion of usability”. Research continues with modelling and trialing a framework for test tool design. Isabel authored “Achieving Software Quality Through Teamwork” and chapters in “Agile Testing: How to Succeed in an eXtreme Testing Environment”, “Testing Practitioner”, and “Foundations of Software Testing”. Isabel has chaired EuroSTAR (2019) and HUSTEF (2018), and presented popular tutorials and storytelling keynotes at conferences worldwide. She is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and received the 2017 EuroSTAR Testing Excellence Award.
