Wearing many hats in start-ups is nothing new, and some of us might have had this opportunity, and challenge, at some point. I am still a Localisation Manager, Technical Communicator, HelpDesk Adviser, and QA Manager. I started as the only person in the company responsible for all these things and more.

Scaling up and hiring a team, commissioning and entrusting new hires with jobs & tasks I previously did – without micromanaging – was a challenge for me.

My talk is about how to wear these many hats and how to let go of the ones you outgrew, while making sure that knowledge transfer and delegating without micromanaging a team is achieved.

I was born, raised and educated in the German countryside; but after my initial vocal education as an Early Childhood Professional, I soon left the country to live in Egypt for 7 years. I trained there after a couple of years, and one Revolution later, to become a German Teacher for the Goethe Institute. I moved for a quick stint to Dublin and stayed a year to teach German, before moving on to Bucharest, where I stayed for 4 years and worked as a German Teacher and Translator. Today, I am back in the German countryside where I originally came from. I decided it’s time to change jobs, and studied for a Master in Technical Communication and Localisation, which I completed this year. At the same time the opportunity arose to move from Localisation management to QA. Today, I’m the QA Manager in the company I am working for.
