Closing the Loop: Using Field Data as a Quality Metric

Like many organizations, we once believed testing ended when the release went out the door. But then we noticed a pattern: important issues surfaced only in the field, where usage and conditions rarely matched our lab assumptions. To address this, we created a practice we call Hypercare—an intensive, post-release period where we monitor telemetry, fault logs, and user feedback in real time.

Hypercare became more than just a safety net: it gave us new quality metrics. We now measure how many field issues are reproducible in testing, how usage patterns diverge from expectations, and how quickly we can respond and resolve. These insights feed directly back into our test strategy, strengthening coverage and reducing defect leakage.

In this session, I’ll share the story of how we introduced Hypercare, the cultural and technical hurdles we overcame, and the measurable improvements we achieved.

Florian Wartenberg is a seasoned software quality assurance and testing leader with extensive experience in embedded systems. Approximately 2 years ago, he joined Vestas as the QA & Testing Software Leader for Turbine Control Software, a pivotal role within the company.

In this capacity, Florian has been instrumental in expanding the team by recruiting skilled software QA and test engineers. Florian holds a degree in Computer Science from Humboldt University. He has further enhanced his expertise by obtaining certifications such as INCOSE System Engineering and several ISTQB certifications, demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning and staying abreast of industry advancements.
