Testing Europe’s Most Advanced Rail Management System

Øyvind Woll

11:15 - 11:45 CEST, Wednesday 17th June

Challenging testing – How to test a complex system that introduces new technologies to the entire railway sector in Norway.

This talk will give the audience insights into our test approach while testing ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) – Europe’s most advanced rail management system in Norways largest digitalisation project. Both lab testing and on-site operational testing are required when testing this system.

Operational testing on-site is typically performed around the clock, often lasting several consecutive days, and requires a full stop in regular traffic. These requirements demand high precision in test planning and timing.

You’ll learn how we planned and timed accurately for the testing to be carried out efficiently. Test data such as infrastructure data, train data, and route plans are thoroughly prepared and validated. If not in place, the testing could be delayed or cut short. This will have a direct impact on the test coverage and may delay production.

We will share our approach, challenges, and the creative methods and processes we have developed to overcome these testing challenges. We will argue that these methods and processes are transferable to other complex domains.

You will learn how we succeeded in delivering the high quality needed. Some keywords are: close cooperation in a highly specialized multidisciplinary environment and continuous improvement by learning from previous experiences and failures. The talk is based on our experience from the Gjøvik Line North, the first railway line in Norway to go live with ERTMS in 2024. Real-world testing in a safety-critical environment with demands for high quality and precision – Testing at its best!
