Towards Sustainable Software Testing

Lilia Gargouri

15:45 - 16:30 CEST, Tuesday 16th June

Sustainability is becoming a critical dimension of software quality, yet its impact on testing remains underexplored. While testing ensures reliability and compliance, it consumes significant resources, and the growing use of AI further increases energy demand and CO₂ emissions.

This contribution proposes a framework for sustainable software testing built on three principles: optimizing test processes to reduce redundancy and energy usage, introducing sustainability-aware metrics to make ecological footprints visible, and fostering organizational awareness to ensure purposeful use of AI and automation. Case insights illustrate how risk-based test selection, energy-efficient infrastructure, and calibrated AI usage can lower resource consumption while maintaining software quality.
