Tutorial H

Let’s Define the ‘Best of Testing’ Together

Paul Gerrard

13:30 - 17:00 CEST, Monday 15th June

What does “testing at its best” really mean in practice? Tools and processes evolve, but the true foundation of testing lies in how testers think and the skills they apply to their work.

This tutorial invites participants to co-create a shared understanding of the capabilities that define excellence in testing, using Paul Gerrard’s New Model for Testing as the framework.

The New Model is not a prescriptive process, but a map of the mental activities testers engage in—from exploring sources of knowledge, through modelling and predicting, to applying tests, interpreting results, and reporting insights. These activities reveal the invisible thought processes that underpin testing, regardless of context, method, or tool.

In this highly interactive workshop, participants will work in groups to examine each of the twelve activities of the New Model. For each activity, they will identify the critical skills, behaviours, and capabilities that make a tester effective. Contributions will be captured in a web application, giving participants immediate visibility of the collective outputs.

At the end of the workshop, the consolidated findings will form the foundation of a Testing Body of Knowledge (TBoK).

Paul will edit and extend the collected material into a published paper, acknowledging all contributors. This means participants will not only leave with new insights for their own practice, but also play a part in shaping a community-wide resource for defining testing at its best.

This tutorial is more than training—it is collaboration, reflection, and creation. Together, we will map the skills of great testers and produce an artefact that endures beyond the conference.
