The End of the World as We Know It – Dealing with Change

R.E.M.s song title says it all; “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)”, everything we know today will end and become obsolete sooner or later, and accepting that, is OK, and you should feel fine about it too! This title covers our continuous journey in Visma, until today, and into the future. We all know that what we did yesterday or do today will become obsolete in some years and accepting the fact that we continuously need to change, shift and learn, I actually feel fine about it and must admit that I eagerly await what the future brings. But how do we prepare for that?

In this story, based upon our experiences, I will go into how we in Visma, have shifted our development and testing practices over the years, and why things done previously cannot be done in the same way today. I will dig into how certain metrics drive our entire organisational performance, how they affect our testing practices, and why they cannot be done without engaging the whole team. At the end I will round off with why we must expect continuous development and change in our field, and how we need to continuously change and learn to accommodate for what is to come in the future.

In Visma, we strongly believe in data-driven decisions, and we are using findings from research such as Accelerate, McKenzies Developer Velocity and data from our own teams to drive and improve how we work. These research results underpin our decisions and resulting changes and have proven that if you want to excel in organisational performance you need to excel in certain key metrics. Data that we continuously collect from our teams in Visma are also correlating with the research result.

Mili Orucevic

Discipline Lead, Testing and QA – Visma, Norway

I´m a technology leader, passionate about software testing, development, and leadership. I work on helping teams move towards modern software development and testing practices, utilising continuous delivery, DevOps and public cloud by applying practices and principles from books like “Continuous Delivery: Reliable Software Releases through Build, Test, and Deployment Automation”, “Accelerate: Building and Scaling High Performing Technology Organisations” and other titles from IT-Revolution. Currently I´m the Discipline Lead for Software Testing and Quality Assurance area, responsible for driving the software testing field within Visma, running a software testing guild, and facilitating workshops, courses and other learning and development efforts for test engineers. 

I like to look ahead and try to challenge the status quo of software development and testing and explore how to utilize learnings from other fields such as leadership, and psychology, and embed these into software development and testing practices. 

Together with 3 others, I also run the Norwegian Test Forum, and organise monthly meetups related to Software Testing and Quality Assurance in Norway – where people with passion for testing gather for knowledge sharing and networking.
